Nest Wireless Thermostat Provides Independence For Those with Mobility Issues

Nest wireless thermostat

Three years ago when we built our house we spent quite a bit of time at the home improvement stores getting supplies. One item we kept eyeing was the Nest wireless thermostat but unfortunately it was not compatible with our air conditioning unit. Thankfully Best Buy sent us the Nest we have been looking at for many years and it totally is compatible with our heating and cooling unit.

Installing the Nest is simple.

Less than 20 minutes from the time the breaker was shut off until it was back on is all that it took. It is so easy you can do it yourself, even if you have no electrical skills. Inside the Nest box is a set of stickers to label the wires as you remove them one by one from the old thermostat. Remove the old thermostat and install the new one. Place the wires in the correct spot and they click right in. Replace the cover and turn on the breaker. It is that simple.

Nest wireless thermostat makes it convenient for those with mobility issues.

This would make a great gift for grandparents or those who have mobility issues, like me. I have Lupus and Fibromyalgia so one of the lovely side effects is sudden temperature changes. Always asking someone to adjust the thermostat a degree or two gets old, not to mention the times in the middle of the night when it gets too hot and you don’t want to wake anyone yet you cannot get up to do it yourself. Now, I can be sure to take care of my physical needs with just a click of the button on the app on my phone. This has proven to be the number one reason why I needed the Nest years ago. My quality of life is so much better now and allows me to be independent instead of sitting in the heat.

Energy Savings

Programming the Nest to your temperature preferences is easy on the app. We have an energy saving plan during certain hours to save money. Although we can use the cooling and heating system during those hours, we often forget to manually turn it down or up and end up missing out on the savings. Now, the app has those time frames scheduled in and automatically adjust based upon our preset temperatures during these hours. We will be saving money and conserving energy at the same time.

Home and away settings

It makes no sense to leave the temperature at a comfortable level when we are not home. Simply click away on the app to let Nest know to go to our away settings. If we forget to do it before we leave, we can simply adjust it on the go. Also, when we are arriving home, setting it back to home means our home is cooling down to the temperature we want. It’s like having our own butler.

Nest app adjusts home temperature

The Nest app gives you control at your fingertips from anywhere in the house or on the go. Adjust it based upon a preset schedule or adjust it one degree at a time. The app also measures the humidity inside the house and also detects what the temperature is outside. It is connected to your home through your home WiFi and allows for anyone with the pass code to change it. We only have the app on my phone, since I am the one who typically adjusts the temperature. If my phone is not charged or someone else wants to change the temperature, it can also be controlled from the wall unit as we typically would before the Nest.

Energy savings is indicated by the green leaf and the energy history indicates how many hours of energy saving time you had for the previous days.

Compatible with most heating and cooling systems

Nest works with both cooling and heating systems. Here in Arizona we are still in the high temperatures of summer so we will not be able to test the heating for a couple of months but I am sure it will the same way.

The one thing we do regret about the Nest is not getting one sooner. Unfortunately the company who installed our air conditioning unit told my husband it would require them to come out and put in new wiring and would cost quite a bit. Turns out it was not true and we spent the last three years wishing we had a Nest. Don’t be like us. Don’t rely upon your home builder’s information. Double check what wires you do have and check out Nest’s website to see if your wiring is compatible with their product.
