UglyDolls: An Imperfect Adventure Video Game Review

UglyDolls: An Imperfect Adventure video game provides family friendly fun.

Thank you to Outright Games for giving us an advanced copy of UglyDolls: An Imperfect Adventure to review.

UglyDolls: An Imperfect Adventure is a fun family game focused around the town of Uglyville where everything is bright and cheerful but just a tad different than most towns.

UglyDolls: An Imperfect Adventure is rated E for Everyone.

Once the game begins, select one of two characters: Moxy or Ox. Moxy loves to explore and is an adorable character to play but Ox is the original founder of Uglyville. Once you pick your character that is the one you will play throughout the game. If a second player joins you in the split screen, the new player will be the character you did not pick.

After picking your character you are greeted by Lucky Bat, who is the narrator for this game. He tells you the storyline and shows images of events.

Lucky Bat gives you some history, if you are not familiar with UglyDolls. The neighboring town called Perfection is maintained by Robots and they are doing what they can to make sure the oddities that make Uglyville so charming and fun are removed, hence the battle between UglyDolls and the Robots.

Your first level is to close the pipe that the Robots use to come into Uglyville.

You arrive at Lucky Bat’s cave, which is located below his tea house in Uglyville. You must use the computer to start new quests and then use the pipe to travel to Uglyville to complete the quests.

While going on quests, UglyDolls must avoid the Robots. Your character loses their courage when Robots get too close. Lose all your courage and you start back at the tea house.

Your first quest is to find Tray. Along the way you collect buttons and open baskets to receive items, all while avoiding Robots. Tray asks you to find three springs to build a machine. Once that mission is complete you return to him to get another mission. This is essentially the game play where you wander wherever you would like, open doors as needed, find items, and use the giant fans to launch yourself into the air.

Players can use a map to help find their way. If you do not know where to go to find items for your quest, simply launch a search balloon. The map opens and then when you close it the item appears on your screen with an arrow to help you locate the item. Once you achieve finding all the items you can bring them back to whomever sent you on the quest. Then you are given another quest.

Fun items to use with your character are the running shoes, which increases your speed, and the pogo stick, which helps you jump higher. A pool float allows you to get across water. If you try to go into the water without a pool float the character loses their courage and respawns outside the tea house. You can also use feathers to craft wings to help you fly.

Split screen game play in UglyDolls An Imperfect Adventure video game

This game works in single player mode or split screen mode on the same console. You can work together to help each other finish the quests or just spend time running around exploring.

You do have puzzles to solve, as not every item is out in plain sight for you to simply walk up and collect. Crafting items to help you open doors and get to the baskets and finish quests is key. Playing with a friend will help make some of the harder puzzles easier, especially when you have a limited amount of time to get inside. Parents may need to help their younger children a few times.

After about 45 minutes of game play on the Xbox One, we completed most of the game and achievements without really trying to finish everything.

Who do you see in Uglyville?

Moxy and Ox are joined by their friends Wage, Babo, Ice Bat, Lucky Bat, Ugly Dog and more on their quests to save Uglyville.

Uglyville is a sweet town full of bright colors that just seems cheery to play in, even if you have to outrun the Robots. Game play allows you to spend as much time as you like in the town. There are three save slots for game play so you can start multiple games or just have one slot for your solo game play and one for game play with a friend.
