Recently my boys attended their very first concert and I am quite afraid that I have set them up big time for failure. We had an amazing time, but that is not what I am concerned about. More like the idea that this is how all concerts are like, when this was a very rare experience for our family with a private concert of songs by Demi Lovato.
So what was so amazing?
Meeting her in person was amazing! When I watched her poise and grace it was hard to realize that she is a mere 19 years old. Her confidence and kindness is inspiring, even to a woman who is *ahem* twice her age.
We were the second in line and she graciously signed the lanyards, posed for two pictures and bumped her TextBand with each of my boys. I so wish I would have taken a moment to record what her message was but we were having so much fun playing with them, we simply forgot.
My oldest son is not looking at the camera simply because he was looking at me. He knows his mom ALWAYS has a camera in her hand, except for this ONE time. Yes, this was the day he wanted his hair spiked in the front and painted red.
When the picture was finished my oldest son walked to the exit and thankfully did not tell her about his shoes; however my youngest son stayed to have a conversation with Demi, just like she was his BFF.
Without missing a beat he bent down on one knee because it was so very important to him that HE tell her about his shoes and how he cleaned them all by himself the night before so his shoes would look nice for her.
He even told her what cleaning product was used and how bad they looked before. She smiled and it was just so adorable to watch him on bended knee. It mattered to him, so it mattered to her. She was so incredibly kind.
There are no pictures or video of this encounter though. Just one mom’s heart full of memories that bring back tears. Even now.
When everyone had their opportunity to meet Demi Lovato, she sang for us. My boys were in the front row and I sat right behind them just soaking it all in. Definitely an experience none of us have ever had before as we heard songs by Demi Lovato live. Her voice is lovely!
After a few songs by Demi Lovato in her private concert she answered questions and somehow missed seeing my little guy’s hand. When she thought she had everyone answered she moved on but my little guy was sure his question was important and was definitely not shy about speaking up in a room full of people. He is six years old and asked her, among other things, if she ever got a break and had someone else sing for her. His question brought an entire room filled with laughter.
One thing we did learn is that she likes to play one certain game backstage. Watch the video to find out which one.
Soon it was over and the boys wanted to sit in the exact seat Demi sat in. Of course they had to touch the microphone too!
The night could have ended right there and we would have had the most fantastic time ever. But there was more. So much more. A full concert with great seats to watch Hot Chelle Rae and Demi Lovato perform was next!
The event began with meeting members of the Hallmark PR team and receiving our very own Text Bands. Everyone received one, plus a bonus one on the way out. The moms were included too so this was so much fun. After receiving the bands we went through a Text Bands 101 course and even though it seemed so tough at first, they are very easy to use.
The bands are adjustable and the best part is that children can put them on without any help. Bonus points for whomever created this nifty feature!
My boys watch me text and Tweet and Facebook and spend time on a smartphone
documenting their every move and food we eat when needed and they are itching to do the same thing. Now they can, at an age appropriate level. The absolute best part is they have to be WITH the person to trade texts. Definitely a safe way to only have messages from people you know.

As we were exiting they did an on camera interview with Hallmark. Both boys had a wonderful time on camera but my little guy grabbed the microphone and started talking up a storm.
How do Text Bands work?
- Place the Band on your wrist.
- Set your message in 10 characters or less.
- Bump with your friend to give them your message.
- Watch your Text Band to see the message they sent you.
- Laugh, have fun, create a new message and do it all over again. And again…
Text Bands are activated by motion like giving a high 5, shaking hands, playing rock paper scissors, or bumping fists. Although we did learn that rockin’ out during a concert induces the activation of the Bands too. Looking around the rows beside us revealed we were all trading texts with each other and helping light up the event.
At the end of the meet and greet, Demi Lovato made sure to stress that Text Bands are to be used only for positive and encouraging words with others. No bullying is allowed.
The size of the band seems huge at first, but after a few minutes it is hardly noticeable. Although the summer heat does get to be a bit much here in Arizona, my boys do not mind wearing them in summer.
One word of caution. It may only be my children, but they like to walk and text. We now have a no walking and texting rule in our house, as I am clumsy and unfortunately they have inherited this trait from me. The best part though is this started the conversation about no texting and driving, at 6 and 9 years old.
The best age for Text Bands is six to ten years old, in my opinion. My boys do not have cell phones, nor will they in the near future. They already requested to see what other options are available for the bands by visiting our local Hallmark store and saved their money to buy their own style band. We now have Darth Vader and and orange and green striped band in the house. Minnie Mouse was sadly left behind at the store to go to another family.
It is rare they leave the house now without their bands and are usually found wearing one on each wrist. They have been to restaurants, doctor visits, waiting rooms, long drives in the car, shopping, frozen yogurt shop, meeting a children’s author, and to the grocery store. When we have a delay they certainly are an entertaining way to wait the time away.
Thank you Hallmark for creating an item that is a fun tool and has a hidden educational element!
Think about it. What are you doing when you use this tool? Texting. What cooler way to learn to spell words than to type it out and then come and give me a high 5 or play Rock, Paper, Scissors. Seriously, every school teacher would have even the most resistant child eager to spell if they used Text Bands!
Text Bands have a retail price of $14.99. You can have fun with one band, but the real fun begins when you have a friend with one or even buy a second one of your own in order to trade messages. The starter set comes with a black or purple band and additional designs are $4.99 each. Switching the bands takes mere seconds and is so easy a child can do it! Now the real fun begins. Hallmark is providing a giveaway for you!

Disclosure: Thank you Hallmark for including our family at this exclusive meet and greet event to learn about Text Bands and make great memories with my boys. The first picture was provided by Hallmark and Demi Lovato and used with permission. All other pictures, albeit with just a cell phone since my camera was not allowed.
